Abstract
This study examines married female immigrants¡¯ relationship with their mother-in-laws and their beliefs that children should care for their aging parents. Eight married female immigrants and two mother-in-laws of female immigrants are interviewed. In previous studies, there has been a stereotype describing ¡¯mother-in-laws like bitches¡¯ and ¡¯mistreated daugther-in-laws.¡¯ This stereotype views married female immigrants as victims, and does not consider presence of other types of immirgated daughter-in-law and mother-in-law relationship. Also, it ignores that married female immigrants¡¯ relationship with their mother-in-laws would change over time. Out of the typical stereotype, this study examines various types of immirgated daughter-in-law and mother-in-law relationship, and changes of their relationship over time. Furtheremore, it is investigated how married female immigrants would provide care for their mother-in-laws if their mother-in-laws need long-term care. In conclusion, policy implications for both married female immigrants and their mother-in-laws are discussed.
